Short answer
ChatGPT Ads are sponsored chat cards that appear below a ChatGPT answer, shown only to logged in adults on the Free and Go plans, and bought through OpenAI Ads Manager on a CPM, CPC or conversion-optimised basis.
OpenAI announced that it was beginning to test ads in ChatGPT on 9 February 2026, starting in the United States. The product has moved quickly since. As of 1 September 2026 ads run in more than 40 markets, self-serve buying is open in the United States and expanding, and OpenAI stated on 31 August 2026 that its advertising business had reached a USD 1 billion annualised revenue run rate in under 200 days.
The mechanics are deliberately narrow. One ad format, the chat card. One targeting mechanism, context hints. Three objectives, billed on CPM, CPC or oCPC. Delivery is decided by a relevance-weighted second price auction rather than by bid alone. Advertisers do not receive users' chats, chat history, memories, names, emails, precise location or IP address, only aggregated campaign performance data such as impressions and clicks.
The limitation worth stating upfront: this is not a like-for-like replacement for paid search. The audience is narrower, the creative surface is smaller, and the measurement stack is younger than anything you are used to on Google Ads. It is a genuine new channel, and it is early.

Why now
India went live on 27 August 2026, and self-serve buying opens from 4 September 2026. That is a matter of days between reading this and being able to run a campaign, which is why the timing question is live rather than theoretical.
9 February 2026
The pilot opens in the United States, restricted to large brands and agency partners under a minimum spend commitment.
5 May 2026
The minimum spend requirement that applied to the original pilot is removed, and web conversion measurement ships alongside it through a pixel and the Conversions API.
27 August 2026
Ads begin appearing to eligible ChatGPT users in India, with more than 50 brands in the initial cohort and WPP and Omnicom named as launch agency partners for the market.
31 August 2026
OpenAI states its advertising business reached a USD 1 billion annualised revenue run rate in under 200 days, and that advertisers across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa can buy directly through Ads Manager.
4 September 2026Upcoming
Indian businesses can run their own campaigns in ChatGPT Ads Manager with daily budgets starting at Rs 725.
The case for moving early
The argument is auction density, not novelty. In a relevance-weighted second price auction, the cost of a placement is set by how many well-matched advertisers are competing for the same conversation. In India that number is currently small, and it will not stay small. The objective of testing now is to establish relevance history and creative learning while competition for the same buyer situations is thin.
The case against
Early means unproven. There is no long-run benchmark data for Indian advertisers, no true CPA bid type, and an audience limited to the Free and Go tiers. Campaigns here are built to test a hypothesis about a channel, not to hit a quarterly number. Fund it accordingly, and keep your existing paid media programme doing the heavy lifting while this one earns its budget.
Mechanics
A ChatGPT ad is a single sponsored card served below an answer, targeted by descriptions of conversations rather than keywords, and ranked by a relevance-weighted second price auction in which your bid is only one input.
which CRM should a 12 person sales team actually use
For a team that size the honest answer depends on how much process you already have. Three things usually decide it: how your pipeline stages are defined, whether you need quoting in the same tool, and what your reporting cadence looks like.

Five elements, and that is the entire creative surface. Every one of them is scored for relevance against the conversation the ad appears in.
Sponsored label
Mandatory, always visible, and visually separated from the answer above it.
Square image
Minimum 256 by 256 pixels. Export larger and let the card scale it down.
Title
3 to 50 characters, but it truncates well before the cap. Front-load the qualifier.
Body copy
Up to 100 characters. This is where the wrong click gets filtered out.
Favicon and destination
Your favicon plus a UTM-compatible destination URL. Relevance is scored on that page too.
Context hints are short descriptions of the conversations, needs, topics and situations where your product is relevant, and they are set at the ad group level. OpenAI is explicit that they are not exact match keywords and that they do not guarantee delivery in any specific conversation. This is the single biggest mental shift for a buyer coming from Google Ads. You are not bidding on a string a user typed. You are describing a situation, and the system decides semantically whether your ad belongs in a conversation that may never contain your words at all.
Keyword thinking
Product nouns. What you sell.

Context hint thinking
Buyer situations. Why they are asking.
comparing accounting software for a small services businesssales team outgrowing spreadsheets and losing deals in follow-upfounder replacing a CRM their team refuses to useYou control relevance by tightening the description, the ad copy and the landing page, not by excluding terms.
The structure is familiar even though the targeting is not. Because context hints are the only real targeting lever, ad group count is how you buy control: one ad group per distinct buyer situation, each with its own hint set, bid and matching landing page. Collapsing several situations into one ad group is the fastest way to lose the ability to read what worked.

A ChatGPT ad renders as a chat card below the generated answer, labelled as sponsored and visually separated from the response. It does not sit inside the answer, and it does not replace part of it. As of 1 September 2026 the self-serve product supports this single card format: no video, no carousel, no display inventory. The constraint is real, and it means the whole creative decision is one title, one line of body copy, one image and one destination.
Ads are served to logged in adults on the ChatGPT Free tier and the Go tier, which is priced at Rs 399 per month in India. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu subscribers do not see ads. That is the honest shape of the addressable audience: large, but skewed away from the highest-spending consumer tier. No ads are served next to sensitive or regulated conversations including personal health, mental health and politics, regardless of which plan the user is on.
Three objectives are available as of 1 September 2026. Reach is billed on CPM and buys impressions. Clicks is billed on CPC. The conversion-optimised objective, oCPC, still bills per click but bids toward a tracked conversion event, which means it needs working conversion measurement before it can do anything useful. There is no true CPA or ROAS bid type yet, so the objective you pick is a statement about what you can measure, not just what you want.
Delivery runs through a relevance-weighted second-price auction. Your bid is one input. The relevance of your ad copy and your landing page to the conversation in front of the user is the other, and it is weighted heavily enough that a well-matched advertiser can consistently outrank a higher bidder. This is the practical argument for doing the unglamorous work: intent-matched landing pages, tight ad groups and honest copy are not brand hygiene here, they are the bidding strategy.
Head to head
ChatGPT Ads and Google Search Ads differ most in what you target (a described situation versus a typed keyword), who can see the ad (two ChatGPT plan tiers versus everyone on Google), and how much creative surface you get (one card versus a multi-asset responsive ad). Everything below is accurate as of 1 September 2026.
| Dimension | ChatGPT Ads | Google Search Ads |
|---|---|---|
| Targeting unit | Context hints: descriptions of conversations, needs and situations, set at ad group level. Not exact match, and delivery in a specific conversation is not guaranteed. | Keywords with match types, plus audience and demographic layers, set at ad group level. Negative keywords available. |
| Buying model | Relevance-weighted second price auction. Objectives: Reach (CPM), Clicks (CPC), conversion-optimised (oCPC, billed per click while bidding toward a tracked conversion). | Auction with Quality Score. Manual CPC plus a mature smart bidding suite including target CPA and target ROAS. |
| Ad format | One chat card: title of 3 to 50 characters, body copy up to 100 characters, a square image, a favicon and a destination URL. No video or carousel in self-serve. | Responsive search ad: up to 15 headlines of 30 characters and 4 descriptions of 90 characters, plus sitelinks, callouts and other assets. |
| Audience | Logged in adults on the ChatGPT Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu users are ad-free. No ads next to health, mental health or political conversations. | Anyone searching on Google, signed in or not, across the full breadth of query types. |
| Position relative to the organic answer | Below the generated answer, labelled sponsored and visually separated. Advertisers cannot pay to influence what the answer says. | Above and below the organic results, labelled Sponsored, competing directly for the same screen as the listings. |
| Creative control | Narrow. One card, visible truncation below the character caps, and relevance scored against the conversation and the landing page. | Broad. Multiple assets, extensions, ad strength feedback and far more surface to differentiate on. |

The service
Nico Digital is a performance marketing agency with offices in Kolkata and Mumbai that manages ChatGPT Ads for Indian and global brands, covering account setup and verification, conversation and intent mapping, context hint architecture, chat card creative, landing page alignment, conversion tracking, budget pacing and pipeline reporting. We are an independent agency rather than a holding company, so a test-sized budget gets senior attention rather than being handed down. Below is the actual scope of work.
We stand the account up so campaigns can go live without a compliance stall.
This is the strategic core of the service, and it is where most of the first month goes.
One ad group per buyer situation, each with its own hint set, bid and destination.
We write to the format that actually renders, including its truncation.
Relevance is scored partly on the page you send people to, so the homepage is the wrong answer.
Measurement goes in before spend does, because oCPC is useless without it.
Spend is paced against learning, not against a monthly calendar.
You get the numbers that let you decide whether to keep spending.

Paid and organic
ChatGPT Ads buy a labelled placement below an answer. Generative engine optimisation, also called answer engine optimisation, works on whether your brand is named inside the answer itself. They are separate systems, and no amount of ad spend moves the second one: OpenAI states that advertisers cannot pay to influence the answer ChatGPT generates.
Inside the answer
Organic. Cannot be bought.
Won through source material an assistant can retrieve and cite, structured and unambiguous claims, third-party corroboration, and presence in the places these systems draw on.
Below the answer
Paid. Bought in Ads Manager.
A labelled sponsored card, ranked by a relevance-weighted auction, billed on CPM, CPC or oCPC. Visible, measurable, and entirely separate from what the answer says.
That distinction has a commercial consequence most brands underrate. If a buyer asks an assistant to shortlist vendors and your competitor is named in the response while you appear only in the sponsored card underneath, you have bought attention inside a recommendation that endorsed somebody else. The paid card is doing the harder job because the organic answer is working against it.
The organic side is covered by our answer engine optimisation service and our broader AI SEO programme. If you want the mechanics rather than the service description, our guide to how to rank on ChatGPT sets out the ranking factors, and the AI search statistics for 2026 give the adoption picture.
The honest position: run both, and do not let either team claim the other's results. Paid tells you what a conversation is worth. Organic determines whether you are in the recommendation at all.
Honest fit
ChatGPT Ads suit brands with working measurement and a research-heavy buying journey who can fund a genuine test, and they do not suit brands that need guaranteed near-term volume, sit in a restricted category, or sell to an audience concentrated on the paid ChatGPT tiers.
Worth testing if
Not worth it yet if
Sector-wise, the strongest early fits we see are D2C and ecommerce brands with considered purchase cycles, B2B and SaaS companies whose buyers research through an assistant before shortlisting, and fintech and BFSI brands, with the caveat that financial services carry stricter advertiser verification.
Cost
There are two separate costs: media spend paid to OpenAI, which starts at a Rs 725 daily budget for Indian advertisers from 4 September 2026, and a management fee paid to your agency, which is scoped to the work rather than published as a rate card. GST applies on the management fee.
Platform floor, India
Rs 725
minimum daily budget
Roughly Rs 22,000 a month at the floor, available from 4 September 2026. In the United States, the minimum spend requirement that applied to the original pilot was removed when self-serve opened to all US advertisers on 5 May 2026.
Reported market benchmarks
Industry-reported orientation only, from mid-2026. These are not rates published by OpenAI, and in a relevance-weighted auction your own relevance score moves what you actually pay.
Management
Scoped, not listed
We do not publish a rate card for this service line. Engagements differ too much by category eligibility, by how much conversion measurement already exists, and by whether intent-matched landing pages have to be built before launch.
A fixed monthly fee against a defined scope, quoted after the fit call. GST is charged separately.
The learning period, stated honestly
Plan for six to eight weeks of spend before the numbers support a decision. A relevance-weighted auction needs time to establish how your creative and landing pages score, context hints take several iterations to settle, and the conversion-optimised objective cannot bid usefully until conversion volume exists. A platform minimum budget will not get you there in that window. Anyone promising a verdict in two weeks is selling you their setup speed.
Getting started
Four steps, and typically two to three weeks from the first call to a live campaign.
Day 1
A 30-minute call to test whether your category is eligible, whether your buyers are plausibly on the ad-supported tiers, and what a sensible test size looks like. If the answer is that you should not run this yet, we say so on the call.
Week 1 to 2
Account setup and business verification run alongside pixel and Conversions API implementation and the conversation mapping work. Measurement is live before spend starts.
Week 3
Ad group architecture, context hint sets, chat card creative and landing page alignment, then launch on a paced budget.
Week 4 onward
Weekly optimisation with a formal read at six to eight weeks, which is the earliest point a relevance-weighted auction with a young measurement stack produces a conclusion worth acting on.
If you would rather talk to a person before any of that, our contact page has the direct lines for both offices, and the team page tells you who you would actually be working with.
FAQ
Twelve questions we get on almost every fit call, answered without hedging. Every platform fact here was verified against OpenAI sources on 1 September 2026.
Yes. Ads began appearing to eligible ChatGPT users in India on 27 August 2026, initially through OpenAI's managed route and its named launch agency partners, WPP and Omnicom. Self-serve access to ChatGPT Ads Manager for Indian advertisers opens from 4 September 2026, with daily budgets starting at Rs 725. On 31 August 2026 OpenAI said advertisers across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa can buy ChatGPT ads directly through Ads Manager.
There are two costs. Media spend starts at a Rs 725 daily budget for Indian advertisers from 4 September 2026, which is roughly Rs 22,000 a month at the floor, though a floor budget will not produce a readable test. Management is scoped separately and GST applies on the management fee. Reported market benchmarks in mid-2026 put CPMs near $25 and recommended CPC starting bids around $3 to $5, but those are industry-reported figures rather than rates published by OpenAI.
Three differences matter. Targeting is by context hints, which describe the conversations and situations where your product fits, rather than by keywords and match types. The audience is limited to logged in adults on the ChatGPT Free and Go tiers. And the ad is a single chat card below the generated answer with a 50-character title and 100 characters of body copy, against the fifteen headlines and four descriptions a Google responsive search ad can carry.
Logged in adults on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu subscribers have an ad-free experience, and ads are not shown to users identified or estimated to be under 18. No ads are served next to sensitive or regulated conversations including personal health, mental health and politics, and that exclusion applies regardless of the viewer's subscription tier.
No. OpenAI states that advertisers cannot pay to influence the answer ChatGPT generates. Ads appear below the response, carry a sponsored label and are visually separated from it. Changing what the assistant says about you is a separate discipline: answer engine optimisation and generative engine optimisation, which work on the sources the model retrieves and cites rather than on paid placement.
Context hints are short descriptions of the conversations, needs, topics or situations where your product or service is relevant, and they are set at the ad group level. OpenAI is explicit that they are not exact match keywords and that they do not guarantee delivery in any specific conversation. The practical consequence is that hints written as buyer situations tend to outperform hints written as product nouns, and there is no negative-keyword equivalent to fall back on.
For Indian advertisers, daily budgets start at Rs 725 from 4 September 2026. In the United States the minimum spend requirement that applied to the original pilot was removed when self-serve Ads Manager opened to all US advertisers on 5 May 2026. A platform minimum is not a sensible test budget, though: you need enough daily volume to clear a learning period before the numbers mean anything.
Political advertising is not permitted. Restricted and excluded categories include adult sexual content, gambling, tobacco and recreational drugs, weapons, illegal or dangerous goods, deceptive schemes and academic cheating services. Health and financial services advertisers may be eligible under stricter eligibility criteria and enhanced verification, and licensed businesses may be asked to evidence their credentials. Separately, no ads run next to sensitive user conversations even for approved advertisers.
Through the measurement pixel and Conversions API for web conversions, which went live with the US self-serve launch on 5 May 2026, plus UTM and source tagging that carries into your CRM so a lead is still identifiable at close. Platform reporting itself is aggregated: advertisers receive campaign performance data such as impressions and clicks, not user-level data, chats, memories or identities.
Yes, because they are separate systems. Paid placement puts a labelled card below the answer. Organic AI visibility determines whether your brand is named inside the answer itself, and that cannot be bought. A brand that only buys ads is absent from the recommendation and present only in the advertisement beneath it. The two channels are usually run together, with content and citation work feeding the organic side.
They can be, with two caveats. Assistant conversations skew heavily toward research and shortlisting, which is genuinely useful for considered B2B purchases, and context hints let you describe a buying situation rather than guess at a keyword. The caveats are that the audience sits on the Free and Go tiers, and that with no true CPA bid type yet you carry more of the measurement burden yourself. Treat it as a pipeline test with CRM-level tracking, not a lead-volume channel.
Plan for six to eight weeks before drawing conclusions. A relevance-weighted auction needs time to establish how your ads and landing pages score against real conversations, context hint iteration takes several cycles to settle, and the conversion-optimised objective needs conversion volume before it can bid usefully. Judging the channel at two weeks measures your setup speed, not the channel.
