Optimising for the citation format itself

Perplexity does not just pick which pages to cite — it picks which passages to extract. The four formats that get extracted at materially higher rates:

Definition blocks

A 30-to-60-word direct definition immediately after an H2. Reranker preference is highest when the definition is the first content under the heading.

The result is that classic Google ranking signals (links, age of domain, pure backlink authority) matter less, while three things matter much more: source recency, structural clarity (lists, tables, definitions), and presence on the source types Perplexity's reranker leans on heavily — Reddit, mainstream news, .edu, .gov and large topical publishers. A page that ranks fifth on Google can be the top-cited Perplexity source if the publication date is recent and the structure is clean.

Perplexity cites a more web-diverse source set than Google AI Overviews or ChatGPT. The bias we see across thousands of monitored prompts: Reddit (heavy weighting on relevant subreddits), Wikipedia (constant reference), mainstream news (Reuters, AP, BBC, NYT, FT), large industry publishers, .edu and .gov for definitional or scientific queries, and topical authority sites in the long tail. Brand-owned domains do get cited, but only when the page is structurally clean and the topic is one the brand has earned topical depth on. Pure marketing pages with no original data rarely cite.

Yes, allow it. PerplexityBot is the official crawler that powers retrieval. The default Next.js robots policy on this site allows it; if your robots.txt explicitly blocks unknown bots or you have CDN bot-management rules in place, check for a 403 response on PerplexityBot user agents. Unlike training-only crawlers, blocking PerplexityBot directly removes you from Perplexity's retrieval pool — there is no upside to blocking unless you have a specific licensing concern. Confirm allowance for PerplexityBot, OAI-SearchBot, GoogleOther and ClaudeBot together; the configuration overhead is identical.
